On January 27, Karla Pearlstein, a vintage home consultant, will present "Evolution of the Modern Kitchen" covering the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Using images from period magazines, brochures, and catalogues, this program will show how kitchens evolved from a water pump, wood cook stove, and a few pieces of free standing furniture to the built-in cabinetry and flashy chrome that has become widespread form the 1930s onward.

Pearlstein's experience encompasses projects from the Victorian era to the 1950s. In 2008, she received the Architectural Heritage Center's "Preservation in Action" Award for the restoration of the 1872 Balch Farmhouse in Portland.

Mark your calendars for this presentation on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, 7 pm. at Astoria's City Hall, 1095 Duane Street, City Council Chambers on the second floor. Please use the 11th Street entrance to City Hall. For more information call 503-325-8024. This lecture is free and open to the public.
